NDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Amy and Jason Lents thought their daughter Haley was suffering from the stomach flu when she began doubling over in pain.

They had no idea she had swallowed magnetic pieces of a toy that could have killed her.

"I just couldn't believe what I was looking at," Jason Lents said.

It took Jason Lents just one look at his daughter's X-ray to realize what was causing her so much pain.

"When I saw the full X-ray, I knew exactly what it was," Jason Lents said.

Pieces of the toy Magnetix, which is made by Mega Brands, were inside of Haley.

"Haley loves Magnetix," Jason Lents said. "Loves them. And, against my wife's advice, I made sure she got those for Christmas."

He said he never imagined his 8-year-old daughter would swallow pieces of it.

"She's only been in America three years, and while she was in Russia, which is where she is from, in the orphanage ... they told us she ate everything she could get her hands on," Jason Lents said.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been at least 33 cases of children swallowing loose magnets and requiring emergency surgery. Officials said 28 of them suffered intestinal injuries specifically from the Mega Brands toy and one child died.

"What can happen is when those magnets get close enough together they will become attracted to each other," said Dr. Bob Collins of Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Collins said those magnets can then rip through the intestines, causing damage comparable to a gunshot or a stab wound.

Haley suffered eight tears in her intestines, he said.

"You can get very, very sick and ultimately (it will) lead to death if (it's) not surgically corrected," Collins said.

"Throughout the day she told us that she loved us so many times," Jason Lents said. "I think she realized what she had done."

Haley's case was even more dangerous due to the amount of pieces she ate. She ate about 30 pieces of the toy.

Mega Brands previously recalled the Magnetix set and several others to add a warning label about magnetic ingestion and to change the recommended age to 6 and over.

In Jason Lents' mind, it's not enough.

"She shouldn't have eaten it," Jason said. "I shouldn't have bought it and it shouldn't be on the shelves. I bought her a toy that almost cost her her life."

An investigation into this case is currently underway by the CPSC.

Mega Brands Toys said children's safety is the company's No. 1 priority and they plan to investigate as well.

What a douche. His Mom was probably the woman who sued over electricuting herself in the bathrub while blow-drying her hair.

Something like this was on Grey's Anatomy, I do believe.

The actual dilemma is scary to think about. The kid's lucky she's still alive, especially after ingesting 30 of those things!!

Yeah, I think I saw an episode of a TV-show around this, probably Grey's Anatomy (I never watch TV, just with my gf, so I don't know one show from another)

And yeah, the father is dumb, probably smells some money in it. That, or he's just stupid in general...

Personally, I'm a fan of natural selection, and it's reintroduction into the human race. I think we need to remove all the cushions and safeties on everything ('cept maybe the cushions on chairs Very Happy) just to be politically correct, and if you get hurt, it's your own fault, none of this suing bull-crap.

He was dumb enough to buy something that was obviously swallowable for what appears to be a girl who he knows puts everything in her mouth. Kid was dumb enough to swallow it. Not the toy companies fault, IMHO.

Haha, there would be no more kids for dumbasses, they'd keep murdering their own offspring.

Chances are, without any product warnings, you two would be dead too.

I'm not doubting your intelligence. I'm just saying, I know quite a few incredibly smart people that were born to some very intelligently-challenged people. For awhile, our lives are completely in the hands of other people.

I've personally been known to stick a knife or two into a toaster, heee.

Yeah, magnets in toys can totally destroy kid's intestines. Surprised there are still stories that are like "OH SHIT MAGNETS HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED" after all those chinese toys got recalled for the SAME THING like, last year or something.

The funny one was of course the one where the toys had a substance that acted like a halucination drug. Not too good if they put it in their mouth Very Happy

OMG SUE!!!!!112 Evil or Very Mad

Seriously, people. Keep an eye on your kids. If you KNOW that she ate anything she could get her hands on, why get her something with easily swallowable parts? This reminds me of a story, about 2 years ago, about a kid who, while wearing heelys (those obnoxious sneakers with the skate wheels in them that kids skate around stores with and crash into people with) skated into traffic, got hit by a car, and his mother sued the manufacturers of the shoes. Way to grieve over your kid, lady. Rolling Eyes

way to watch your daughter while she plays. way to even check on her often enough, you know, every now and then, to see if she's eating things. Like magnets. Way to realise that she probably loves them because they fit in her mouth. Way to ADMIT that you KNEW she likes eating things. and WAY to grab the bull by its horns and SUE THE TOY company because YOU ARE NEGLIGENT. smooth, asshole. real smooth. unlike your daughter's stool. That's not smooth. That's magnetic.
