that's because they used cartridges. if it plugs into the console, then it's prettymuch region free. (controllers, memory cards, cartridge games, etc) but since the PSP uses these UMD disks (i have no idea what the DS uses) it was pretty cool of sony to hold back the regions, since they COULD have done it.

ALL Nintendo games, sans the GC, have been region free.

But they've always had physical lockouts... like, a Super Famicom game doesn't fit into the slot of the SNES. A gameshark can act as a pass-through and solve that, though. Same with N64.

N64 you actually needed to remove the little plastic doors and cut the casing a little so carts could fit I believe.

The only import N64 game I have is Sin and Punishment and I picked up a cheap converter to use with it.

But surely a physical lockout is just another version of region-coding, to some extent.
"You can't play this game because it's not for your region" etc.
I don't think there's any reason cartridges couldn't be coded for regions, right?

the nomad wasn't

The turbo express couldn't have been either since the pin lay out of the hu cards were different between US and Japanese games

no clue on the lynx or Game Gear

but all the nintendo ones have been region free

and I wish hardware makers would take a note from that and make their consoles Region free too

I wouldn't have had to have modded my PS2 if they did that

There is no way I am getting a PSP right now. I might get a DS for x-mas though. So on the DS how close to you have to be to Link-up with them? And does it cost money to text message on the DS?

It's such a bad idea. I mean, people would throw a fit if they imported a car from another country and then couldn't drive it or something.
Why should films and games be any different?

psp is like a really good hooker. incredibly hawt but she's expensive and gets used up real fast. the ds is the girl next door type, you can take her out on a nice date for a reasonable cost, she's pretty, and you can know her your whole life with out draining out.

Nah, it's because it's a different business model. Companies have branches across the world, and they'd like to see them all profit. Even though, say, importing a japanese Konami game into the US is good for KoJ, it doesn't do jack for KoA.

What REALLY sucks is that not all games are brought over. There's a group of people who decide what region will enjoy what titles, and THAT is ass.
