This game was easily one of the biggest disappointments this generation for me. Mario Kart is one of my favorite series, and the SNES and GBA games are amazing IMO.
Even though Mario Kart 64 already had an absurdly easy and boring single player campaign (not to mention some of the worst rubber-band AI ever) it at least had an amazing multi-player battle mode in the Block Fort level. I should have known better than to get excited about DD!!.
DD!! takes the focus away from racing skill and shoves constant and abusive item use to the forefront. They reduced recovery time and increased the item rate. It has some of the worst track design of the series... aside from 2 or 3 standouts, the tracks are just miserable.
The worst offense, though, is easily the lack of any worthwhile multiplayer mode or levels. Couple that with Nintendo's stubborn anti-online stance and LAN play that is comparable to Miyamoto coming to your house and kicking you in the nuts and you get the worst multiplayer experience of any Mario Kart out there. _________________ >>>-\-[games]-\-[journal]-\-[pictures]-\->>

I'll admit that the multiplayer modes aren't much to get excited about.
But at the same time, I think that everything else is excellent and people that don't admit it are just looking through the rosey-red glasses of nostalgia.
The track design is very good overall, with a few levels that are the best in the series (the one mountain stage with the cannon is amazing). DD! does a better job of conveying elevation than MK64 as well.
The addition of two people per kart with character specific super weapons is awesome. Though some abilities are more balanced than others (woot red koopa!) overall it's not too bad. Not to mention that two player co-op on one kart is rope a dope.
Item use isn't as horrible as people (MOZ) say IMO. Especially if you put the item level down to the lowest setting. Even with all the items flying around, a good player will still beat a worse player 90% of the time.
And yea, no online sucks, but I hardly think that is a fault of DD!, it is more a problem with Nintendo in general.
So there! _________________

What a glowing endorsement. I have completely changed my mind and now love this game.

I love this game!
...lack of fun multiplayer?? The ghost house is FANTASTIC!! This game made me develop a sick obsession for throwing the giant bananas forward...they fly like angels.
I'm not good enough to beat Star Cup on 150cc though... |

My little brother got DD!! for Christmas. Who was the one playing it for the next week non-stop? Me =/ I was obsessed. The game pissed me off so hard, but I kept playing because I was determined to get the new characters, cars, levels, and whatever else I may have forgotten. When I beat the game, and got the gold car I did my victory dance and never played it again =p But yeah, it *is* fun, or else I wouldn't have been so addicted to it. The SNES version was one of my favourite games too. The feather item, and that battle level? I'd play that for hours with my brother. Good times _________________ http://s1.gladiatus.com/game/c.php?uid=40542

That's basically my main gripe with the game. Single player DD!! is as easy as single player MK64: they're both over in a good week or so. It's the multiplayer that makes the game worth it, and DD!! dropped the ball like whut there. _________________ >>>-\-[games]-\-[journal]-\-[pictures]-\->>

Couldn't say it any better myself. It's not exactly trash, kept me entertained for about an hour, but gah, I was expecting SO MUCH MORE. _________________ AND THRUST! (7•_•)7 ----> (>^.^)> ----> (›°¬°)› ----> *SPLURT* |

I felt that the two per cart deal was a very nice touch (it can get chaotic at times, but never is it not fun).
Never found the weapons to be much of a problem. What I do like are the speed, the fun courses, the battle mode, the double players and different carts.
What I don't like is the slow speed in the battle modes. It almost kills it but then it doesnt.
And while the courses are good, I think there should have been more longer tracks. The just all seemed to be short overall.
Baby park is really fun with friends though, it just turns into one big "who can corner the best" contest.
And weapons are supposed to be there. If you want a skill based racing experience, play some other game, MarioKart has been and always will be, fun with friends.
As far as the whole, "this one sucks" thing goes. I don't think its that the games are getting any worse. Its just that the formula is very restrictive. I don't think theres anything Nintendo could do to make it a deep game. Its just light, multiplayer friendly fun. Thats it. After a while people start to see the repetition and they either don't like it anymore or they just accept that its a modern console version of what they already love so the fun can continue. I think by this installment, its becoming more and more visible and that where people are devided.
But thats just me, maybe it does suck, all I know is that I like it.

I personally find the game amazing.
The weapons have always been a main part of the game. It's the selling point of the game, makes it FUN.
The course layout is original and meant to be that way. It's supposed to be non traditional and fun to play on, not JUST meant to be racing.
It takes the concept of a competition, much less of a race, though at its core it IS a racing game. If you play an entire round without using weapons, it can still be fun(but who wants to do that?)
And I do like the fact that LAN play is randomized characters. Only because of the fact that most people usually choose the same character every single time, so this adds for some variety and less time fighting over the "You always pick that character, let someone else use them!"
And if you're complaining about the lack of online play, just look up The Warp Pipe Project on google. They're working on/created(haven't checked in a while, not sure) a way to play Mariokart double dash!! online.
And the only time I haven't beaten less skilled players in the game, as you say the weapon feature abuses the skill factor, is if we're both at the finish line and I get attacked by some sort of weapon that prevents me from finishing first X.X _________________ "The Highlander was a documentary, and the events happened in real time."
