Well, here it is, release day for D&D 4.0. I know some around here (myself included) have seen the books beforehand, and might have a decent-to-good understanding of the rules by now. I, personally, am still going to buy the books, but I wanted to know, what's the C7 Forum's opinion of the game insofar, even if you're just seeing them today, or if you've had em for weeks?

Personally, i rather like it, mainly because it does a very good job of streamlining and balancing all character classes. The system feels intuitive and is good for what it does. I personally think it's a pretty good step forward for the face of table-top gaming.

That being said, you really do lose out on some of the "classic" D&D feel with the system, but it doesn't feel completley removed from its origins to me. Moreso just a modernized version. Also, character building doesn't feel as open-ended as it did in 3.x to me (then again, 2nd ed didn't have that open of a character scheme either, so really this just takes away from 3-4 and kinda moves back to 2, IMO.)

I wouldn't call the game balanced. They pretty much just maxed out all the characters. It's even because everyone is broken. Which I like. Everyone gets to do crazy epic shit, and all the monsters get to do crazy epic shit and everyone's happy.
I love the emphasis on alternative builds. I made a dwarven ranger who dual weilded throwing hammers. At level 1. No weird cross feats or different interpretations of rules, just at level 1, natively the ranger class + dwarf had total support to make a crazy hammer throwing dwarf. I tried going back and putting it together in 3.5 and it just doesn't work.
The system's alot easier to run combat, make new campaigns, and do just about everything important to D&D. I can't wait for more books for more options and powers and all sorts of crazy stuff.
On one note though, because everyone is broken, PvP is out of the question at this point pretty much. The PvE game has alot less emphasis on "ONE DIE ROLL DECIDES LIFE OR DEATH" (PS: new death rules FTW), but in PvP because everyone is just so rockin' that usually just a few moves decides the match.
I definetly like it though, and I can't wait to get my copies in the mail from amazom.

what's wrong with ranger with the TWF tree and quick draw? Focus on the light hammer, as they are throwing weapons, maybe a level or two of fighter to snag some bonus feats (or the alternate ability from complete champion to turn in spells for fighter feats) and get into master thrower later on? Razz

You wont have all the abilities you have in 4.0, but then again, that's why it was 3.x and not 4.0 Razz

I like 4e. They did some interesting things with it. Haven't played too much of it, so I can't totally comment, but I think it's pretty cool.

But I also still love 3.5. They're totally different systems. 3.5 has that delicious customizability and breadth due to its infinite numbers of splatbooks. Sure it's nigh incomprehensible at first, but when you put it all together, oh! the things you can do! <3

I'm taking my first steps into D&D, because I was planning on running a roleplaying campaign this summer and I thought: "what the heck, let's see if I can run a D&D adventure"

I've got the 4th edition core books, Keep on the Shadowfell and I found some nice internet resources for counters, character sheets, etc.

What pushed me to do it is these nice podcasts of Scott Kurtz (PVP) playing some 4e D&D with Tycho and Gabe (Penny Arcade). The adventure they play is based on the quickstart provided with KotS and I presume the adventure itself is KotS, but I'm still reading stuff, so I'm not sure.

It's actually pretty fun stuff, and calling me a nerd is pretty darn ridiculous, as I have no classic nerd traits beyond an above average computer knowledge...

I wish I was a nerd though, maybe that'd mean I wouldn't spend like $300 on liquor and parties each month...

I'm pretty sure the number requirement is, you must be a nerd.
And when it says must, it really means are.

Anyway, I think I'm going to play a warforged, they sound like tons of fun.

Also, Byron: can you explain how you designed the hammer throwing dwarf? Just the basic gist of it, not the whole character build.

Dwarf + Ranger (take only abilities that apply to two-weapon fighting AND ranged attacks) + Dwarven Weapon Whatever feat.
