My rankings:
Third place goes to the crowbar from HL and HL2. It is by far the weakest weapon in the game, but it just gets so damned much screen time. Seriously, if you aren't going through about half the game using the crowbar, you are probably doing it wrong.
Second place is the wrench in Bioshock. If it weren't for the big daddies, I would seriously be able to go through the entire game using just the wrench and plasmids. In what other games do your melee attacks do as MORE damage than any regular gun?
First place is, and shall probably always be, the chainsaw in Doom. There is nothing quite like it. Not only one of the most useful weapons in the game, it is also one of the most fun.
Honorable mentions:
Anything from Condemned. There is just so goddamn much to choose from, and they are all good. Soooooo good.
The flashlight in Doom 3. Not too good as a weapon, but you need to use it more than anything else in that game, so it deserves a mention at least.
The biff attack from Halo/CoD/numerous other games. A one hit kill is always useful, but it is just too common to place.
The stunstick that the combine soldiers use in HL2. You never get to use one yourself (except in the combine destiny mod, but that doesn't count), or else it would probably rank higher, but it is still one of the coolest weapons you'll see in the game. _________________ How many punches does it take to get to the center of your face? |

Bad games?
They're some of the best and most influential games ever! Also, why not add to the discussion and mention some good ones, if you hate these so much.
Seriously though, what major FPS franchises have I missed? Quake had no good melee attacks, and the shield gun in UT sucked balls. _________________ How many punches does it take to get to the center of your face? |

I submit that you are retarded, and that you do not know what a good game is. _________________ How many punches does it take to get to the center of your face? |

Chainsaw for number 1 of course, though there's some other stuff I liked.
Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green had the best melee weapons of any game, and it had zombies.
I fondly remember the baseball bat, the hammer, the shovel, the lead pipe and the fire axe... |

I raise you Dead Rising. (Awful pun fully intended)
I realise I am several months late to this game, but I have not played any other game with such scope for terrible puns.
"Hey, you know who my favourite country singer is? Johnny CASH! Whats that, what I just said didn't REGISTER with you? Excuse me sir, you forgot your CHANGE!"
It's around this point I get hit with a beer bottle, bound, gagged, and sent to coventry. _________________ Goblins, Goblins, Goblins... |

Third-person.

Same, although I almost put it on the list just because its so great.
Going into third-person games would be too hard to name all the great ones (Splinter Cell, Hitman, and GTA to name a few). In addition, I haven't played nearly as many of the great TPS' as I have of FPS', so I felt more qualified to make this list.
Though, after playing through TF2, I need to add that to the list. I didn't put the knife in CS or all of the extremely similar TFC weapons onto the list, because they're all basically the crowbar with a different skin, but TF2 adds a lot to the playing field. Whether its the baseball bat, the bonesaw, the glass bottle, or the machete, all the weapons are varied and all are extremely awesome. _________________ How many punches does it take to get to the center of your face? |
